Fire chief resigns, commission looks at administrator post

The Great Bend City Council will meet Monday night and the Barton County Commission will meet Wednesday morning, and both plan virtual meetings due to COVID-19 public gathering restrictions.

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, at City Hall, 1209 Williams. One can also view the meetings on Access TV via Cox Cable Channel 20 or live online at www.facebook.com/gbcitycouncil/.The meeting will be recorded.  

The agenda includes:

• The resignation of Fire Chief Luke McCormick.

• A Moderate Income Housing Grant for Great Bend Economic Development Inc.

• The 2023 Street Resurfacing Project.

• The Sunflower Rod and Custom Association Operating Agreement.

• A executive session to discuss contract matters which are covered by attorney-client privilege.


County Commission

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The meeting will be open to the public but will also be streamed live due to COVID-19.

It will be streamed through Microsoft Teams. Citizens may view the meeting through their own sign-in or by signing in anonymously.

The agenda includes:

• Annual report from County Attorney Levi Morris.

• The position of county administrator, and the promoting of Operations Director Matt Patzner to that post

• The contract for county counselor.

• An update on the Facade Improvement Grant Program.

Following the agenda meeting, the following appointments are scheduled:

• 10 a.m. – personnel with Levi Morris, county attorney.

10:30 a.m. – program update with Veronica Coons, Barton County  Conservation District manager. 

10:45 a.m. – inmate medical costs with Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

11:15 a.m. – highway striping and cold mix asphalt bids with Barry McManaman, county engineer, and Darren Williams, county works director. 

11:30 a.m. – grant update with Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services director. 

11:45 a.m. – regular business discussion with Matt Patzner, director of operations. 

1:30 p.m. – Teams meeting with Sen. Caryn Tyson.
