Fog sealing of streets delayed, but still planned

If your street has been chip and sealed, please continue not to park on it, City Administrator Brandon Anderson said, addressing the City Council Tuesday night. The hope is that fog sealing part of this project will start next week, but there is no definitive date.

“The vendor that’s doing that project kind of worked us in,” he said. “They had a of window of opportunity open up.”

However, “the heat slowed that down. They held off for one week just because of the heat,” he said. The fear was the seal wouldn’t adhere and cure like it needed to because it was too hot.

But, they are supposed to come back in the first part of next week, he said. Once they start, it should go pretty quickly.

Still, the contractor has other projects in the works, so Anderson said he hesitates to set a solid start date.

“I just wanted to make the public aware that I don’t want to put a statement out that says when we’re going to do it until we actually know,” he said. “I apologize for that short notice, but if you had a chip seal project on your street, just be aware and continue to not park in that street if possible. We know that’s an inconvenience.”

Once there is a definite date, he said the city will announce it.

And, “if we do have to tow a vehicle, we’ve just been towing them around the block. So hopefully this should go smooth and happen pretty quickly,” he said.

Once the Fog coat has been applied it is advised not to drive on it for at least two hours after initial application.  A fog seal is a light application of a diluted slow-setting asphalt emulsion (a thin liquid oil) that helps extend the life of the resurfacing.

“This is a good product to come back in on top of that chip seal,” Anderson said. It has been challenging, but it is worth the effort.

“Please be attentive as crews work in these areas,” said Public Works Director Jason Cauley. “We will make every effort to minimize the impact to traffic and we thank you for your patience as we understand that this an inconvenience.”
