They may not score a single point, but the latest team sport added at Great Bend Middle School is still spelling V-I-C-T-O-R-Y.

The USD 428 Board of Education voted to add cheerleading to the middle school this semester without really knowing how it would take off.

Cheerleader sponsors Amber Luchesi and Lori Tennis report a huge S-U-C-C-E-S-S.

“We have had 47 girls out for cheerleading during football season,” Lucchesi said. “We are very pleased with the numbers and are expecting a few more girls to join after volleyball season ends.”

“It is exciting to see how many girls are interested in cheering for their peers,” Tennis added. “We can tell that the girls are happy to be a part of a team that is recognized as leaders in the building.”

“Our girls are learning the cheers outside of practice and taking it very seriously,” Lucchesi said. “They are to learn their cheers at home by watching videos in Google Classroom and then we review them during practice.

“There are people in our building and outside of our building who have said what a positive program this is for our students and they can tell how this is spreading spirit throughout our student body,” she said.

“It has set a positive tone for our building, especially on game days,” Lucchesi continued. “The addition of a new activity at the middle school allows more opportunities for students to become involved in their community.”  “During the school day of the first home game, there was a noticeable difference in the amount of school spirit in the hallways,” Tennis said.
