Discover the many gifts your flower garden provides, from edible treats to decorative items, during the Kansas Wetlands Education Center’s adult class series, “Gifts from the Garden” held throughout the summer months.
The series starts with “The Language of Flowers,” from 2-3:30 p.m. on June 11. People have been sending “messages” with flowers for centuries, with each flower species holding a meaning, but what are flowers really telling us? Discover hidden messages and more about flowers and create your own lace and paper Victorian-era tussie mussies. KWEC supplies the dried flowers, paper and lace, you bring any special decorations to add. Register by Thursday, June 8 for this free class, by calling KWEC, 877-243-9268.
Another old custom, pressing flowers is the subject of the July 16 class, from 2-4 p.m. Roam KWEC’s garden and prairie to gather and press your own flowers, utilizing the tried-and-true method and a new, faster method. Create your own pressed flower card/picture, applying previously pressed flowers from the KWEC garden. Register by July 10 for this free class, by calling KWEC.
During the herbal vinegar class, August 13, from 2-4 p.m., participants will taste and make their own herbal vinegars to take home. Learn the various properties and tastes of vinegars from cider to Champaign and the herbs used to add subtle flavors. Due to the expense of vinegars, there is a $10 fee for this class. Register by August 7, by calling KWEC.
