The Macksville City Library’s fourth Story Time was an Epic Adventure to “Unearth a Story” in the Land Down Under.

Forty bigger kids, two littles (a total of 64 people) enjoyed the Didgeridoo Down Under Show on June 22.

Raihan was our guide, teacher, and musician extraordinaire.

He wowed the audience with his didgeridoo playing and showed us that almost any hollow tube can be used for a didgeridoo. He told kids about the Aboriginal Australians who have played didgeridoos for at least 1,500 years. We learned about Aboriginal artwork, many different animals from Australia, and the importance of remembering that we are all one human family! And along with shout outs: “I Love to Read!” and “I Follow the Golden Rule!” he emphasized the importance for caring for our Earth and the importance of sharing, empathy and kindness.

Kids learned so many interesting facts about Koalas (not a bear), Capybaras (you can ask a kid what fun fact they learned on that one), Platypus (amazing Monotreme), and more.

The show stoppers for many kids were Raihan’s two live critters, Lollipop the blue-tongued skink, and Snuggles the kingsnake. Kids and adults got to pet the animals if they dared, and all eyes were on them as they went around the room.

Raihan ended the show with the didgeridoo playing, along with other instruments from around the world. Kids melted, jumped and danced and ran from crocodiles with his story song and wound up with some mindful breathing and a time for questions. (We all wanted to know how he played so long without seemingly taking a breath.)
