Great Bend’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church is organizing running, walking and cycling events for Let’s Move Day, on Sunday, Sept. 22. The event is part of a national effort to get as many people possible involved in physical activity on that day.
The local events start at 3 p.m. next Sunday at the parking lot of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, located one mile west of 10th Street and Patton Road. The church is just across the street from the head of the Great Bend walking and biking trail. Registration opens at 2:30 p.m. for a two-mile walk, 3-5 mile run, and 10 & 20 mile road cycling.
For more information call 620-792-2991 or 791-7314. Dr. Bell Razafindrabe’s Spine Clinic is also a sponsor of this event.
This is the third year that the free event has been offered in Great Bend.
Sponsors at the church note that First Lady Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move” in February 2010 to help solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation, so that kids born today reach adulthood at a healthy weight. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America has joined some 50 other faith and community organizations in supporting this national initiative by launching Adventists In Step for Life.
Nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese, increasing their risk for asthma, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep problems, depression, and bullying. Some of the contributing factors are decreased exercise; large portion sizes; too much refined foods; not enough whole grains, fruits, and vegetables;  and the inability for low-income families to access healthy foods.
