ELLINWOOD — The Ellinwood City Council, as its regular monthly meeting, voted to limit access to the old city dump due to liability issues.
Ellinwood’s old landfill was closed about 30 years ago but old broken glass and concrete has worked its way to the surface.
“My whole thing is about what we are responsible for,” said City Administrator Bob Peter. “I have concerns about liability.”
The council voted unanimously to limit parking to the northeast corner of the old city dump only. The city will put signage telling people where they can ride four wheelers and the designated parking area.
In other business, the city approved a fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. on July 4 with an alternate weather date of July 5. They renamed the display the “Jerry Menges Memorial Fireworks Display” in honor of Jerry Menges.
“It’s a great honor and totally deserved,” said Peter. The city has had a fireworks display for nine years.
Mayor Frank Koelsch said that a fifth person has been named to the Recreation Commission Committee. Greg Maxwell will serve.
The council approved a cereal malt beverage application for the Sidewinders Motorcycle Club for the After Harvest Festival. They will be moving the beverage tent to the north end of the swimming pool parking lot, allowing for more of a walk-through and eliminate choke points.
In the city administrator’s report, Peter said June Jaunt went well. He also said that they are working on a souvenir program for the After Harvest Festival.
In addition, the city is accepting donations for the fireworks display.
