ELLINWOOD — While it is common for eagles to visit the area throughout the year, soon eagles of a different kind will add visual interest to Main Street in Ellinwood.
“I’ve always been intrigued by the Cow Parade. Abstract cows are all over Chicago,” said J. Basil Dannebohm, Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce administrator.
Chicago began the Cow Parade in 1999. The Cow Parade is a public art display where sculptures of cows, decorated by local artists, feature scenes specific to the area.
“The cow sparked a movement,” said Dannebohm. “It’s a really fun pop art.
People know about the wheat shocks on the light poles in Ellinwood, yet Dannebohm wondered what artwork the community could add that was small in size.
The mascot for Ellinwood High School is an eagle. Capitalizing on the theme of “Where eagles soar,” and the large number of birds that visit Cheyenne Bottoms and the area, Dannebohm thought, “let’s do eagles.
“It’s a trend to take something unique to the community,” he said
The poured concrete eagles will be made to order and weigh about 40 pounds. They can be brought inside of the business at night.
The artist can prime the eagle and then paint it with any kind of acrylic paint. Afterwards, shellac is applied. Dannebohm added that concrete is not overly porous.
The business that purchases the eagle can choose any creative artist that they know.
“The possibilities are endless,” said Dannebohm.
