HOISINGTON — The evening of Nov. 5 proved to be one of the most successful days for Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation as the organization hosted their first Mardi Gras/ Shrimp Boil and Auction to benefit Barton County children living with cancer both now and in the future.
The evening kicked off a social hour with music provided by Once On A Tuesday with Tony Rubio on sax, Luc Brust on pans and keys and Kerry Bainum on percussion. A Mardi Gras arch was created by Anne Beck for mardi gras goers to have a professional photo taken by Melinda Kurtz, Great Bend.
Two silent auctions were held during the social hour. A wonderful meal of shrimp, sausage, mushrooms, potatoes and corn on the cob, was provided by Randy and Jimmie Haddon, Lone Wolf Restaurant and Catering, The Haddon’s son, Chance, is a leukemia survivor and was assisted by Kans for Kids.
Kate Brennan Weber was the MC for the evening with T.R. Esfeld as the auctioneer. The duo provided a lively and fun-filled auction.
Many generous Barton County residents were in attendance as well as individuals from as far away as Topeka, Tulsa, OK and Omaha, NE.
According to Kans for Kids directors Duane and Debbie Reif, the evening was overwhelming. "This was Kans for Kids’ first attempt at an event of this magnitude. Our board of directors worked so hard to make this the success that it was. Over $18,000 was raised with the auction. How very blessed we are to live in an area that continues to support Kans for Kids with their generosity."
Kans for Kids is currently providing assistance for 3 Barton County boys: Adam Andrulis, Great Bend, son of Stephen and Michelle Disque, was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma on Oct. 9, 2011 and is a patient at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Aaron Fryberger and Dade Cannon, both of Great Bend are in the last months of their 3 years of treatment for leukemia (ALL). A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the Kans for Kids Endowment through Golden Belt Community Foundation.
