Members of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce celebrated its successes at its 89th annual meeting and banquet Saturday, but also with a vision for the future by developing moderately priced housing.
"Building for the Future" was the theme of the well-attended evening.
The first major success of 2010 was welcoming Redbarn Pet Products, and the 175 jobs they created. The third annual Big Bend Bike Rally was a success, as well as the 3i Show, along with the new Barton County Young Professionals group. The success of the "My Town" project was also celebrated.
Ron Straub, chairmen of the executive committee, unveiled plans for what affordable housing for families would look like, and urged the community to explore, dream and discover.
"Its a tough world we live in," said John Francis, board of directors. Yet, he spoke of the good of a man like Walter J. Straub who was named "Citizen of the Year." As a young man, Walter encountered adversity in his life, but made it through with character and dedication to the community.
Walter’s son, Larry, accepted the award on his father’s behalf and thanked the chamber for the wonderful honor.
For it’s success, Kustom Floor Designs was designated as "Business of the Year." It is owned by Christ and Mark Bitter.
"It is a genuine honor to receive this award," said Mark. "We’ve been able to make a lot of friends. We couldn’t do this by ourselves. The people that work for us give us their best because they choose to. Thank all of you."
The evening ended with entertainment by "Retroactive."
