A Claflin woman died Wednesday when the car she was driving crossed the center line and struck a FedEx tractor-trailer on K-156, a mile or two southwest of Claflin.

Rachael Diane Stueder, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Sarah Jean Hickel, also a 20-year-old Claflin resident, was transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital.

A spokesman for the hospital said Hickel was in good condition Wednesday afternoon.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident occurred at 3:35 a.m. Stueder was traveling northeast in a small Pontiac when she crossed the center line. Robin L. Taylor, 51, of Wichita was approaching in a Volvo semi-tractor pulling two trailers, and he swerved to avoid a head-on collision. Taylor said the swing of the second trailer did not make it off the roadway; he heard a crash and felt a heavy jolt.

The car hit the second trailer at the left rear.

Kansas Highway Patrol and Claflin Fire/Emergency Medical Service assisted at the scene.
