HOISINGTON — The Hoisington High School debate team started its season by bringing home five medals from Hays recently.
Nick Doerschlag received the first place novice speaker award, and he and his partner, Seth Colson, placed second (out of 14) in the novice (first year) division with a 4-1 record.  They defeated teams from Garden City, TMP-Marian, Junction City, and Salina-Central.  Their only loss was to the Garden City team that placed first.  Nick and Seth were competing for the first time ever.
Logan McHenry and Corbin Crawford placed sixth (out of 15) in the open (varsity) division with a 3-2 record.  They defeated teams from Hoxie and Junction City, and received a bye.  They lost to teams from Garden City and Salina-Central.
Robbie Willesden and Elizabeth Lacey earned a 2-3 record, defeating teams from Garden City and Dodge City.  They lost to teams from Colby, Larned, and Dodge City.  Although Elizabeth is just a novice and debating for the first time, she competed well in the open division.
In the overall school sweepstakes, Hoisington placed fourth (out of 10) with a combined 9-6 record.  First place Garden City and second place Colby had 12-3 records.  Third place Salina-Central had a 10-5 record.
The next competition for the Cardinals will be the Central Kansas League Tournament at Sterling College on Oct. 16.
