A Great Bend man who was already in custody at the Barton County Jail was arrested on a warrant for alleged attempted second-degree murder on Thursday.
Bond for the new charge against Reynaldo Jonathan Verduzco-Gonzalez was set at $100,000.
As of Friday, a formal complaint had not been filed by the Barton County Attorney’s Office and details of what prompted the new warrant were not forthcoming. An employee at the County Attorney’s office said only County Attorney Douglas Matthews is authorized to answer questions there, but he was at a conference Friday and could not be reached. The case was investigated by the Great Bend Police Department, but no one who was familiar with the case was available to answer questions at the GBPD.
Verduzco-Gonzalez has been in custody at the county jail since April, when he was booked on charges of contempt of court and battery. The battery charge filed on April 9 stems from an event on Oct. 5, 2013, where he allegedly caused bodily harm to another man. A pre-trial hearing on that case is scheduled for June 23.
In other previous court cases involving the suspect, he was booked last August on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of stolen property. He entered a plea of not guilty in December. The Kansas Department of Revenue ordered that his property be seized and sold to pay a $7,395 drug tax owed on marijuana and a controlled substance.
On March 8, Verduzco-Gonzalez, an Ellinwood woman and an Albert man were arrested a motel in Russell. According to KRSL radio, TNT Bonding Company called Russell County Dispatch at 3:30 a.m. that morning to advise two armed felons wanted out of Barton County were at the Super 8. A search warrant was obtained for the room and suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia were seized
