New Year's rape suspect arrested

   The Barton County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man suspected of holding a woman again her will overnight on Jan. 1-2 and raping her.
Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the incident occurred at the All Seasons Mobile Home Park on NE 30 Road. Officers began their investigation early Friday morning as soon as it was reported to 911.


Officers from the BCSO, assisted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant Friday evening at a residence north of Great Bend. Based on information that the suspect might be armed, the residence was put under surveillance most of the day.


“By about 6:45 p.m. the residence had been surrounded by sheriff’s officers and KBI agents. The suspect was ordered out and surrendered without incident,” Bellendir said. “Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene late Friday evening collecting evidence and processing (the) crime scene.”


Colin Michael Welch, 20, of Great Bend was arrested on two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of rape, criminal threats and battery domestic violence. He was booked into the Barton County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
