Spelling champs Jazmin Garcia, a sixth grader from Riley Elementary, won the Barton County Spelling Bee by correctly spelling longitudinal. Garcia is the daughter of Bruno and Sonia Garcia. The runner up is Westin Hughes, a sixth grader from Ellinwood Elementary School. Hughes is the son of Kristy Hughes. Third place went to Taylor Schwartz, a seventh grader from Hoisington Middle School. Schwartz is the daughter of Joshua and Miranda Schwartz. This years Barton County Spelling Bee had 24 participants from 12 Barton County schools. The bee took place at the Great Bend Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 1. The winner and runner up will advance to the Sunflower Spelling Bee on March 8 in Hays on the campus of Fort Hays State University in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.
