Bowl ‘n One event planned

To benefit the United Way of Central Kansas, there will be a bowling and a putt-putt golf tournament on from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Walnut Bowl. It is dubbed Bowl ‘n One.
For $30, a team of three can compete in either the bowling tournament, the putt-putt tournament or both. There will have prizes and trophies for the winners.
Sign up sheets are available at the United Way office (1125 Williams), Walnut Bowl (3101 Washington) or check out United Way of Central Kansas on Facebook.
Walnut Bowl will have the snack bar open for food and drinks. Chris Battin’s Great Bend High School Distributive Education Club of America  marketing students have created all the signage and gotten the word out about the event.

Each year Julie Smith, director for United Way of Central Kansas, visits the fifth grade classes at Unified School District 428, Holy Family School and Central Kansas Christian Academy, all in Great Bend.
She talks to the classes about giving back and community service and each of the students depicts a poster based on the current campaign theme. For the 2015 campaign the theme is “Pay it Forward.”
At the Great Bend High School Panther’s home football game on Friday, Sept. 19, the 15 winners of the contest representing each school presented their poster to a business or volunteer that supports the United Way of Central Kansas.
The students are listed with the school they were attending at the time they drew the posters. Some of them have since transferred to a different school.
The winners were: From Riley Elementary School, Nicole Ordonez and Marlene Madrid; from Holy Family, Will Linenerger, Suzanna Schneider, Kendyl Henning and Drew Nicholson; from Jefferson Elementary, Rieley Fuentes and McKenna Cape; from Park Elementary, Briana Perez and Ethan Reneau; from Eisenhower Elementary, Bralee Williams and Miya Daubert; from Lincoln Elementary, Mariela Carrasco; and from Central Christian Academy, Jaci Guthrie and Mollie Phillips.
The businesses represented were ONEOK Natural Gas, Parr Lighting and Sound, Linde Corporation, Barton County, American State Bank, Dr. Perry and Krista Smith, Best Western Angus Inn, Fuller Industries, CUNA Mutual, Holste and Bowers, Credit Union of America, Edward Jones – Jim and Kathi Armatys and Todd and Barb Armatys, Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball, Mark’s Custom Signs and Marmies.
“This is important for these kids,” Smith said. “They need this recognition.”
In addition, the young artists see the importance of giving back to the community, she said.
Speaking of giving back, Smith credited Sara Mauler, GBHS junior, with coordinating the poster presentation. She tackled it as a service project.
The goal for United Way of Central Kansas this year is $270,000. “United Way of Central Kansas supports 19 local agencies and 99 percent of money raised goes back into our community,” Smith said.
