Band students at Great Bend High School are proving the quote, “There’s no off season for band,” as true. The Spring Band Concert on Monday night culminates a year of hard work up to the end of the school year. The concert is at 7 p.m. in the GBHS Gym and will honor the seniors and their parents. The varsity, junior varsity and jazz bands will perform, and various band awards will be presented. The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.
Prior to Monday, the Jazz Band and some flag participants performed at the annual three-day Variety Show. On April 26, instrumentalists competed at the State Music Festival in Emporia with excellent results. Soloists which received I ratings were: Anna Frizell, clarinet; Allison Regehr, french horn, Michelle Rooney, euphonium; Gatlin Reed and Ben Diel, trumpet. The Brass Trio of Ben Diel, Kayn Milholland and Andrew Erb also received a I. Soloists awarded II rating included: Jordan Otten and Michael Raymer, alto saxophone; Clara Kachanes, violin; and Dorian Lueth, viola.
On March 13, the Varsity Band and Junior Varsity Band both received I ratings on their contest selections from Judge William McMosley, Salina.
On May 14, some of the band members will join up with the orchestra at their Spring Concert for a Symphonic Orchestra. Varsity members will play Russian Sailor’s Dance, and the Junior Varsity will perform selections from The Wizard of Oz. The Orchestra Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and will have performances by the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Orchestras in addition to the two GBHS orchestras. This concert is also free.
