LARNED — The Bill Glass “Behind the Walls” group presented an entertaining and uplifting program recently to a welcoming audience of youth and staff at the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility (LJCF).
Gathered in the LJCF gymnasium, team members Tanya Crevier, Duché Bradley, Carlton Bentley and James Henderson spoke about stepping up, staying focused, and working on treatment programs.
They were joined by volunteers from throughout the state, who talked personally with youth residents in their respective living units.
“We are always excited to have the Bill Glass speakers with us,” said Dr. David Hales, facility chaplain. “It has been a few years since they have been here. We welcome them and their positive message of hope back into the facility this year as well.”
Youth residents clapped, cheered, and shouted as Tanya Crevier presented her trick basketball routine. Crevier is billed as the world’s finest female basketball ballhandler. She was a member of the San Francisco Pioneers and the Iowa Cornets in the WBL women’s pro basketball league.
Many were already familiar with Duché Bradley’s experience with inmate populations, as well as being a former body guard for celebrities, “Puff Daddy,” and “J-Lo.” He is a life coach, who impacts trains and develops individuals to be strong leaders today, for tomorrow’s future.
James Henderson, Guinness world record holder in power lifting, was equally moving. Henderson was a five-time super heavyweight world bench press champion in the International Powerlifting Federation. He bench pressed a world record 711 pounds.Carlton Bentley’s motivational talk was inspirational.
“It really made a difference,” said Joyce Haberman, a corrections counselor who works with the youth.
She noted that one young man, “now has a card to sit on his shelf and admire that he didn’t have before ... to show him that somebody cares.”
The Bill Glass Behind the Walls group is based out of Duncanville, Texas.
