Iola loses in semifinals; Hays eliminated

LE SUEUR, Minn. — Iola's Legion baseball team qualified for Saturday's semifinals in the Class AA Central Plains American Legion Baseball Regional. Wisconsin Dells, Wis. beat Iola 17-2 in Saturday's semifinals. Iola finished third in the regional with a 32-8 record. Iola beat Rancho 2-1 from Las Vegas, Nev. in Friday's quarterfinals.

Foley, Minn. beat Wisconsin Dells, Wis. 1-0 in Sunday's championship game. Kyle Kipka's squeeze bunt scored Cameron Jurek with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Foley finished the Legion season with a 29-0 record. Jurek was named tournament MVP with three wins in 14 innings. Jurek, Tyler Midas, Tanner Brosh and Hunter Hamers made the all-tournament team. Wisconsin Dells finishes with a 36-4 record.

Foley, Minn. eliminated the Hays Monarchs 7-1 in a quarterfinal game that started after 11:30 p.m. Friday. Hays waited all day for a pool play game to qualify for the quarterfinals.

The Rancho Rams, Nev. beat Moose Lake, Minn. 11-4 Friday, scoring its 11th run in the final at-bat. The top two teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinals. The first tiebreaker was least runs permitted per inning. The Monarchs yielded 16 runs in two games. Las Vegas permitted 12 runs in 12 innings (1.0); Hays yielded 16 runs in 13 defensive innings (1.23); and Moose Lake gave up 15 runs in 12 defensive innings (1.25).

The Hays Monarchs and Iola qualified for regionals at the Class AA state tournament at Colby, which saw Larned finish fourth with a 2-2 record.

The Hays Monarchs beat the Rancho Rams of Las Vegas, Nev. 7-2. Monarchs' Jordan Gottschalk and Braiden Werth each had two RBIs and Jared Vitsum delivered three hits. Kameron Schmidt earned the victory. The Monarchs led 4-1 in the second game, but lost 14-4 to Moose Lake, Minn. Moose Lake scored eight runs in the fifth inning.

Iola crushed McCook-Miner. S.D., 17-4. Iola’s Kason Siemens hit two homers for seven RBIs.
