So far, the improvements at the 10th and Grant street intersection have been pretty innocuous, Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis said. That is about to change.
City officials Tuesday afternoon announced that Phase II of the U.S. 56 and Grant project is scheduled to begin Monday, April 22, weather permitting. “We haven’t noticed it yet, but we soon will. This will start affecting traffic flows through that area,” Francis said.
Traffic will be restricted to one lane, each direction, through the project area. The westbound left turn lane will be modified but kept available.
The north leg of Grant Street will remain closed to through traffic as the concrete is still curing and there remains work to be done.
“This (Kansas Department of Transportation) project is vital to the 10th Street traffic to help with visibility and safety of that intersection,” said Public Works Director Simon Wiley. The contractor for this project is Morgan Brothers out of LaCrosse.
“Please continue to support the local surrounding businesses and special thanks to the public for understanding,” Wiley said. “The City of Great Bend appreciates the patience of motorists and residents while this work is being performed.”
“We ask that motorists pay attention and take a little more caution through there,” Francis said.
This is an 85-working-day project. So, if things stay on schedule, it would be done by mid July.
The junction is a KDOT project with Morgan Brothers having the low bid of $688,473. This project is funded through a KDOT Geometric Improvement Grant which requires 10 percent city matching funds. The city is committed to matching funds up to $214,000.
