Student posters ‘Put the Brakes on Fatalities’

Seven-year-old Kaymi Zink of Claflin, 8-year-old Finley Maloney of Kingman and 11-year-old Jeffrey Hamm of El Dorado are the south central Kansas winners in the 2018 Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day poster contest. 

Kaymi and Finley also are the statewide winners in their age groups. Kaymi won in the 5- to 7-year-old group, and Finley won in the 8- to 10-year-old group. Jeffrey won the regional award in the 11- to 13-year-old group. 

Each student will receive a bicycle from the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas at presentations at their schools. 

The presentation for Kaymi will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood. 

The statewide winners also will receive a Kindle Fire tablet from the KTA, a $50 Amazon gift card from the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association of Kansas; and a $50 gift card from Walmart and movie passes from AAA Kansas.

A total of 836 kids across Kansas ages 5 to 13 took the time to think about safety and participated in the contest. Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is a nationwide effort to increase roadway safety and reduce all traffic fatalities.
