Weekend fires in Great Bend included a mobile home at 5501 Ninth St. and a vehicle fire at Fifth and Hubbard. The Great Bend Police Department is investigating the vehicle fire, involving a truck that was reportedly stolen.
Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said units were dispatched to Finer Mobile Home Park, 5501 Ninth St., Lot 79, at 1:27 p.m. Sunday. No one was home at the time. Firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from a window. Because the fire had extended into the small attic area of the trailer, firefighters had to pull down the ceiling and insulation to extinguish it. Units were on scene for three hours.
At 11:52 p.m. Sunday, units were dispatched to Fifth and Hubbard, where a one-ton gin pole truck was on fire. The passenger compartment and engine compartment were both in flames. The fire was quickly extinguished.
According to the Great Bend Police Department call log, the 1981 GMC truck was reportedly stolen from Duke Drilling, 620 Hubbard St., and caught fire in the driveway while leaving. Other items were also reportedly stolen from the business.
On Monday, an investigator with the Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office was in town looking at both fires with Capt. Luke McCormick, the GBFD investigator.
