The second suspect involved in a high-speed chase through Great Bend Wednesday has turned himself in to authorities.

"I don't believe there was really any imminent danger to the public," said Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, with regards to the suspect at large after the high-speed chase ended.

A Barton County Sheriff deputy on active patrol west of Great Bend attempted to stop a blue Hyundai Sonata for speeding on the morning  of Wednesday, Nov. 1. The vehicle fled from the Sheriff’s deputy and a high-speed chase ensued with speeds hitting up to 115 miles per hour west of city limits.

During the pursuit, law enforcement discovered the vehicle was reported stolen earlier in the day from Great Bend.

The chase continued from West Barton County Rd into the city limits of Great Bend eastbound on 10th St.

The driver failed to negotiate a north bound turn on to Roosevelt St. and entered a parking lot where it collided with a parked SUV that was unoccupied. The vehicle chase ended when the stolen vehicle became wedged under the SUV it struck. The two suspects then continued on foot.

Law enforcement officers from the Great Bend Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived on scene of the collision in the parking lot of On the Rocks Liquor Store and Eagle Barber Shop. Those in Eagle Barbershop next door to the liquor store, said they saw one suspect run past the business with an officer giving chase.

The two occupants of vehicle fled on foot. The driver was located about a block east of the accident scene near Randy's Machine and Repair and was taken into custody. The driver has pending charges in Ellis and Rush County’s and is a juvenile. Numerous charges are pending for traffic violations and also for theft of the motor vehicle.

According to the sheriff's office, the second suspect escaped the area but later turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office and is also a juvenile. Charges for the second suspect of obstruction of a law enforcement officer are pending. Both individuals have been released to the custody of the Juvenile Justice Authority in Barton County.

Area businesses and a local elementary school were on lockdown while law enforcement searched for the second suspect. Eisenhower School remained in lockdown until the end of the school day.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we kept students inside today but continued the daily schedule as normal," said Andrea Bauer, USD 428 Public Information Director.

Cherished Blessings Child Development Center also went into lock down during the search for the second occupant.
