GREAT BEND — August W. “Gus” Werhahn, 92, died Aug. 10, 2012 at Sterling House in Great Bend.
He was born July 12, 1920 at Great Bend, the son of August H. and Anna (Gagelman) Werhahn.
He married Elynor Mae Brancato June 19, 1943 at Great Lakes, Ill. She died Oct. 23, 2003. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Williams Institute of Mortuary Science in Kansas City. He worked for Burgat-Hulme Mortuary in Great Bend prior to his military service.  He was Barton County sheriff from 1947 to 1951. For most of his life, Mr. Werhahn was a self-employed realtor and insurance agent, later working for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Mr. Werhahn was a lifetime Great Bend resident. He was a United States Navy veteran serving on the USS Solace as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class during World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180 where he was past commander, and A. F. and A. M. Lodge No. 15, Great Bend.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Boyle and her husband Jim, Olathe; a sister: Mabel Hiss, Great Bend; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Walter Werhahn; and three sisters, Mildred Mull, Elfreda Walker, and Margaret Werhahn.
Funeral Service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend with The Reverend Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery with military rites by U. S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation is scheduled from1 to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home.
Memorial Funds are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
