ODIN — Bernard “Barney” J. Prosser, 88, died Aug. 16 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born July 14, 1924, in Mt. Angel, Ore., he was the son of Joseph A. and Eleanor (Ficker) Prosser. In 1951 he married Gladys Utne in San Diego, Calif. A resident of Odin, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 31 years and retired as a major. He also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retirement he worked for a government intelligence agency in Washington, D.C., and had many Military Declarations including the Purple Heart. In 1955 he moved back to the Odin area and began farming and ranching.
Mr. Prosser played in dance bands in the 1940s and enjoyed playing music and cards.
Survivors include three brothers, Norbert “Bones” Prosser and wife Frances of Odin, Bob Prosser of Kalispell, Mont., and Alvin “Shorty” Prosser and wife Bernadine of Russell. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one brother, Joe D. Prosser.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin with Father Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be at the Holy Family Cemetery in Odin. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Hospital in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.nicholsonrickefh.net.
