CLAFLIN — Betty Jean Hickel, 90, died May 3, 2020, at HaysMed, Hays, Kan. She was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Heizer, Kan., the daughter of Harry and Beulah (Susank) Lawrence. Betty was a graduate of Hoisington High School.
On May 28, 1951, she married Robert E. Hickel. He preceded her in death on May 21, 2011.
Betty was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she had belonged to the church choir and the Altar Society.
She is survived by six sons Steve Hickel and wife Dorian, Rick Hickel and wife Dawnya, Doug Hickel and wife Karen, all of Claflin, Curtis Hickel of Great Bend, David Hickel and wife Cheryl, and Kyle Hickel, all of Claflin; three daughters, Janell Hubbard and husband Doug of Claflin, June Halliwill and husband Jeffrey of Wichita, and Janine Dutton and husband Kirby of El Dorado; 24 grandchildren; and 44 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A Private Family Graveside service will be held at this time at the Claflin Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life Mass to be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Claflin Ambulance Fund or the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation in care of the Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.
