Calvin Clifford Winter, 95, passed away February 15, 2022, at Brookdale Senior Living in Great Bend. He was born on August 29, 1926, at Hoisington, to Walter Henry and Mae June (Mowry) Winter. He married Marie Smith on February 9, 1947 at Garden City. She died on December 21, 1985. He then married Linnea Searls on November 14, 1986 at Hoisington. She survives.
A lifetime Barton county resident, Calvin was a member of First Christian Church, VFW Post #3111 and American Legion Post #180. Cal was an accomplished athlete in high school and continued his love for sports throughout his life. After serving in WWII the United States Navy, Cal attended Kansas State University. After graduation he went directly to Bushton, Kan. where he coached all sports and became known for his coaching demeanor and winning teams. He then moved on to LaCrosse and ended up in Great Bend, where he became the Guidance Director of the Great Bend School District.
He had great friends and they spent most of their time hunting and golfing. He was excited about his 3 “Hole in Ones” at the Lake Barton Golf Course. Cal loved the outdoors and felt that Kansas was the most beautiful place on earth. Survivors include, his wife Linnea Winter of the home; two daughters, Debra Steinbacher and husband Jim of New Braunfels, Tex. and Kim Maneth of Pratt; a brother, Dr. Walter H. Winter, Jr. of Arvada, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Trista Voos, Tabor Maneth, Gabriel Nall, Cade Brodbeck, Ashley Brown, Sydney Steinbacher and Nate Steinbacher; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marie Winter; a daughter, Fawne Winter; three brothers, Harold Winter, Dr. Wayne Winter and Glenn Winter; two sisters, Velma Betz and Dorothy Dowse; and a grandson, Sabin Steinbacher.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home with Reverend Josh Leu presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials have been designated to the USD 428 Education Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
