Charley W. Chief Briggs 1924-2012

HOISINGTON — Charley W. “Chief” Briggs, 88, died Dec. 28, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  Born Sept. 26, 1924 at Bartlesville, Okla., he was the son of Ocie and Cora (Chair) Briggs.
He married Wyvona Welch June 11, 1953 at Medford, Okla.  She died March 18, 2000.
A Hoisington resident since 1953, Charley was a driller for various local oilfield companies.  He served during World War II as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, and was a life member of V.F.W. Post #7428, Hoisington.  He enjoyed fishing.  
Survivors include a step-son, Pat Briggs and wife Cathy of Lyons; four brothers: Robert Briggs of Aurora, Colo., Paul D Briggs of Albuquerque, NM, Earl Briggs of Moran, and Anthony D. Briggs of Garden City; two sisters: Naoma A .Keller of Borger, Texas and Lorene Wilson of Moran; two grandchildren: Melissa Oden and Michael Briggs, both of Lyons, and one great-grandson, Jeremiah Briggs of Lyons.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Briggs, an infant brother, and by one sister, Zella Ruth McVey of Moran.
A private family inurnment will take place at Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington.  There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.  Memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Post #7428 or American Heart Association.  Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.nicholsonrickefh.net.
