Edward L. Koopman, 83, of Great Bend, died Oct. 22, He was born in Great Bend on Dec. 30, 1926, to Edward C. and Myrtle Pettit Koopman. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1944 and attended Kansas State University, where he played basketball. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, receiving a medical discharge in 1945.
Mr. Koopman was a member of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend and sang in the church choir for many years. He began his career with Carter Oil in Great Bend, which eventually became Exxon. He was transferred to Amarillo, Texas, Oklahoma City and Houston, where he retired after 35 years.
After he retired in October of 1983 he moved back to Great Bend. He was a member of the American Legion, played golf for many years and was an avid member of the Great Bend Racquet Club. He enjoyed many hours at coffee and lunch with his friends and was a beloved uncle, great-uncle and great-great-uncle.
He is survived by a niece, Marilyn Rensch and husband, Brent, two great-nieces, Amber Brokar and husband, Jeremy, and Megan Appelhans and husband, Jarod; also by a great-great-niece, Madison Brokar, and a great-great-nephew, Caden Brokar. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia M. Hayes.
There will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be private at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Humane Society in care of Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
