ALMOGORDO, N.M. — Evelyn Margaret Folkerts Mazurkiewicz, 87, passed away June 2, in Alamogordo, N.M. Born March 27, 1924 in Larned, she was the daughter of Harm and Mabel (Simmons) Folkerts. Evelyn Mazurkiewicz began her schooling in a one room school, West Point, close to the family farm. She graduated from Larned High School in 1942. In 1945 she graduated from Wesley Nursing School. To serve our country, she joined the Civil Service as a nurse during the end of World War II and served the army in Korea. She spent 20 years in the Panama Canal Zone as the Director of Nurses at Gorgas Hospital, from which she retired in 1987. Evelyn met and later married John Mazurkiewicz in San Deigo, Calif. in 1946.

Survivors include her daughter, Joanna Giglio and her husband James of Los Lunas, N.M.; two sons, John Mazurkiewicz and his wife Claudia of Warrenton, Va. and Paul Mazurkiewicz and his wife Sharon Weaver Mazurkiewicz of Alamogordo, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two sisters, Glenna Rose Row and her husband Alvin of Overland Park, and Georgiann Bauer of Pawnee Rock; three brothers, David Folkerts and his wife Cecille, Terry Keenan and his wife Gloria Denny Keenan and his wife Eileen, all of Great Bend; two step-brothers, Larry Keenan and his wife Patti, and Pat Keenan and his wife Dortha, all of Great Bend;and a step-sister, Gloria Ball and her husband Jim of Burien, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents and parents-in-law; brother, Donald Folkerts; four step-brothers, Paul, Russell, Ora and Robert Keenan; three step-sisters, Louise Dale, Sylvia Langer and June Kleeper and a great, great nephew, Tanner Kneebone.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Wayne Herpin, S.J., Celebrant.
