George W. Bemis, 77, died Jan. 26 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 25, 1935 in Great Bend, he was the son of Carney and Ula (Falgren) Bemis. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas City. On Oct. 31, 1959 he married Jane Olsen at Sparta, Wis. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was owner and operator of Bemis Construction, Inc.
Mr. Bemis was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as captain with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Beta Theta Pi, ROTC at Kansas State University, Kansas Contractors Association, Association of Oklahoma General Contractors, Kansas Brick and Tile Board of Directors, and Kansas State Board of Technical Engineers.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Bemis, of the home; two daughters, Claire Hoberecht and her husband Arthur Haggar of Lake Stevens, Wash. and Barbara Peterson and her husband Craig of Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren, Cassie Hoberecht, Kristen Hoberecht, and Christopher Peterson; and two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Maddie.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Inurnment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice in care of the funeral home.
