Gerald “Gary” F. Larkin, 86, longtime Great Bend resident, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Gary was born on June 28, 1930, at North Loup, Neb. to Rex L. and Alma Mae (Cox) Larkin. He grew up and attended school in North Loup, Neb. and was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Meinecke on May 27, 1956, at Burwell, Neb. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Great Bend. Gary served in the United States Marine Corps from Sept. 12, 1951 to Sept. 11, 1953, on active duty in the Korean Conflict, and after discharge from active duty served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves until Sept. 11, 1959. He worked as a derrick worker in the oil production industry nearly all his life, having retired from Trans-Pacific Drilling in 2000. Gary was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marilyn J. Larkin of Great Bend; one brother, Gene (and his wife, Hazel) Larkin of Lincoln, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale Larkin; and three sisters, Fran Lorenzen, Leo Day, and Dorothy Ingraham.
Graveside funeral services with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at the Ord City Cemetery in Ord, Neb. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Charter Funerals in Great Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Belt Humane Society at Great Bend.
