James R. "Jimmy" Godfrey, 101, died June 17 at Kaye Pogue Hospice Center, Salina. He was born Feb. 1, 1910 at rural Bushton the son of William J. and Rose C. (Finnin) Godfrey.

He married Katherine Elizabeth Gabel July 16, 1934 at Great Bend. She died Jan. 21, 2001. He was a retired counterman for Scheufler Supply in Great Bend and Russell; and retired operations manager for American Parts System.

Mr. Godfrey was a Great Bend resident since 1943. He served in the National Guard during World War II. He was a member of Prince of Peace at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus Council #862 (3rd and 4th Degree).

Mr. Godfrey was a former Grand Knight and state district deputy of Knights of Columbus; former director of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and former coach at St. Rose School. He was state president, state deputy commissioner, and state youth commissioner of Kansas Amateur Softball Association, was appointed a life member of the National Softball Association of America, and Kansas Commissioner Hall of Fame. He was honoured by the city of Great Bend with the naming of the softball complex at Veterans’ Memorial Park with the Jimmy Godfrey Softball Complex.

Survivors include one son, James Richard "Dick" Godfrey, Jr. and wife Helen of Salina; two daughters, Patricia Ann Horn and husband William of Polo, Mo.;

Barbara Jean Wegner and husband William of Warrenton, MO; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Odella Gardner and Beverly Gabel both of Casper, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill Godfrey, Hugh Godfrey, John Godfrey, and Lawrence Godfrey; and three sisters, Jean Siefers, Margaret Wille, and Marie Thompson.

There will be a vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary: 7 p.m., today at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m., Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Concelebrants will be Father Reginald A. Urban and Father Warren Stecklein. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home.
