HOISINGTON — LaVerne Elaine Carman, 92, died March 7, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1923 at Lamar, Colo., the daughter of William and Hattie (Plotner) Ross. She married Kenneth Sylvester Carman Aug. 17, 1949, at Hoisington. He died June 13, 1987. She married Art Hickel March 28, 1990, at Hays. He died Oct. 7, 2004. A Hoisington resident since 1943, coming from Colorado, she was a teacher for Cheyenne School District No. 51 and Hoisington USD 431, retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Carman was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and Kansas Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Leona Ross of Jamul, Calif.; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leland Ross and Cecil Ross; and one sister-in-law, Marie Ross.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Ron Bailey, officiant. Interment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a reception of friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kans for Kids or GPS Kids, in care of the funeral home.
