LARNED — Leon Shearrer, 72, died Nov. 10, 2013 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1941, in Wagner, Okla., he was the son of David Fred and Edna Witt Shearrer. On June 10, 1962, he married Virginia Swartz at Macksville. She died on June 5, 2006.
A lifetime area resident he was retired from the Pawnee County Sheriffs Office in Larned. He was in law enforcement for 37 years, worked in the Pawnee County sheriff’s office for 28 years and was the Pawnee County sheriff for 20 years.
Mr. Shearrer was of the Christian faith. He was a member of the Kansas Sheriff’s Association, the Fort Larned Lions Club and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include, three daughters, Jennifer Eakin of Lawrence, Rebecca Knauf of Rozel and Stacy Shearrer of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Frank Shearrer of Larned; a sister, Audrey Bridges of Weleetka, Okla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by, a brother, Wincle Shearrer; and four sisters, Osea Mulanax, Wholline Ganner, Lottie Mae Leach and Sue Greathouse.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Jack Hopkins presiding. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be at the Larned Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to the Kansas Sheriff’s Association in care of the funeral home.
