Lyle E. Schaben, 89, died July 26 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. He was born Aug. 27, 1924, at Bazine, the son of John and Verda (Ryersee) Schaben. Mr. Schaben was a graduate of Bazine High School. He married Nathalie J. Borger Feb. 15, 1947, at Bazine. She died June 22, 2012. Raised on the family farm, he began farming as a young man and he and Nathalie raised their family in the house built by Lyle’s father. Lyle retired from farming when they moved to Great Bend in 2005, due to health reasons. Lyle also worked as a relief pumper for Cities Service/Citgo, beginning in 1965, retiring after 26 years of service.
Mr. Schaben was a member of Bazine United Methodist Church and served 27 years on the Bazine Coop Grain and Supply board of directors.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Schaben and his wife Connie of Hays; two daughters, Yolanda Schaben and her husband Johnny, and Patti Amerine and her husband Martin, all of Great Bend; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alva Schaben and Wayne Schaben, and one grandson, Gregory Schaben.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Bryant Funeral Home. Pastor Carrie Buhler will officiate. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bazine Cemetery, Bazine. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Memorial donation to Gentiva Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
