A fourth positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) has been reported in Barton County, county Public Information Officer Donna Zimmerman said Wednesday afternoon. The case is in the rural northeast part of the county.

Mary Kathryn Mater 1929-2016

Mary K. Mater, age 87 years, died Saturday morning, Nov. 26, 2016 at Cherry Village Residential Care in Great Bend. Born on July 9, 1929 at Hoisington, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary T. (Schreiber) Pelz. She graduated from Hoisington High School in 1946 and then attended Washburn University at Topeka.
She was united in marriage to Sgt. Donald Mater in 1956 at Hoisington. Mary worked for Marlette Mobile Homes, Esveld Engineering, and Holiday Inn of Great Bend prior to her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and loved her three cats. She was a longtime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend.
Mary is survived by one son, Paul J. Mater of Hoisington; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sgt. Donald Mater in 1966, and three sisters: Eleanor Riedl, Shirley Pelz, and Rosie F. Peschka.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in care of the family for later designation.
