BARNARD, Mo. — May Joan Field Tompkins, 88, of Barnard, Mo., passed away March 20, at Parkdale Manor in Maryville, Mo. Born May 14, 1922, in Brentford, England, she was the daughter of Herbert and Fanny (Ricks) Field. She worked in a munitions plant during World War II, making shell casings. Joan married Raymond Lee Tompkins on Feb. 5, 1944, in St. Lawrence Church of England, Brentford, England, becoming a "War Bride." Raymond returned to the United States after the end of the war and Joan and her first born son came in 1946. Joan worked as a clerk at Wylie’s and J.C. Penney’s in Great Bend, and as a CNA at Great Bend Manor and Parkdale Manor in Maryville, Mo.

Mrs. Tompkins was a member of the First Christian Church in Great Bend, attended the Guilford United Methodist Church in Guilford, Mo., and was a member of Nodaway County Widowed Persons Service, the Barnard Historical Society and O’Howell Strader American Legion Post Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Thacker of Barnard, Mo.; three sons, Alan and Mickey Tompkins of Searcy, Ark., Stephen Tompkins of Hutchison, and Robert and Marcia Tompkins of Lonoke, Ark.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Daphne and Paul Chappell of Little Neston, England, and Jean Wootton of Surrey, England; sister-in-law: Mary Tompkins of Maryville, Mo.; aunt, Rose Newman of Brentford, England; cousin, Queenie Hunt of Peacehaven, England; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on Oct. 14, 1994; her parents; son-in-law, Jerry Thacker; sister, Pauline Field; and brother, Bert and his wife, Cynthia Field.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Price Funeral Home Chapel in Maryville, Mo. Burial will be at the Barnard Masonic Cemetery in Barnard, Mo. Friends may call anytime at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Guilford United Methodist Church.
