Paul D. Hazen, 88, died Dec. 20 at his home in Great Bend. He was born Nov. 13, 1924, at Odense, the son of George and Idella (Beggs) Hazen.
He married Betty Lee Kempke Aug. 16, 1944, at the home of his parents at Erie. She died Nov. 1, 1996.  He then married Helen Sanders Jan. 19, 2001, at Great Bend, where they made their home.
He grew up in southeast Kansas, moving to Lorraine in 1942. He and Betty first lived in Erie, and moved to Kansas City where he worked as a mechanic.  In 1945, they moved to Holyrood, where Paul was self-employed in the oil business and also worked as a licensed television repairman.  The family moved to Ellinwood in 1964 where he began working for Kaiser Francis Oil Company and later Phillips Petroleum.  He owned and operated Hazen Oil Company until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Hazen, of the home; two sons, Donald “Doc” Hazen and his wife Carol of Fort Myers, Fla., and Keith Hazen and his wife Beth of Dodge City; one daughter, Connie Roth and her husband John of Ellinwood; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Matas of Orange, Calif.; two stepsons, Daniel Sanders of Sterling, Colo., and Donald Sanders of Great Bend; two brothers, Robert Hazen and his wife Janice of Holden, Mo., and Ralph Hazen and his wife Bonnie of Mount Airy, N.C.; two sisters, Ethel Markham of Erie, and Shirley Spousta and her companion Ed Ford of Belton, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharlene Kay Yager; two brothers, Harold Hazen and Bernard “Buck” Hazen; and two sisters, Georgia Judy and Helen Louise Hazen.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, at  St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore as celebrant. Interment will be at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations to Kans for Kids or Prince of Peace Parish may be made in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
