LIEBENTHAL — Sylvester F. “Sonny” Urban, 82, died Jan. 23 at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born Aug. 7, 1930, in rural Rush County, he was the son of Stephen S. and Paulina (Dater) Urban. In 1949 he graduated from Schoenchen High School. On June 2, 1956, he married Dorothy Ann Herrman at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal. She preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 1978. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was the owner and operator of Sonny’s Tavern in Liebenthal, until his retirement.
Mr. Urban was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2340, both in Liebenthal. He was a former Grand Knight.
Survivors include his sister, Juanita Schaffer of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by is wife; five brothers, Joe, George, Tony, Benedict and Daniel; and eight sisters, Regina Weiser, Anna Haberman, Monica Urban, Barbara Sander, Philomena Landau-Cassan, Eva Marie Niedens, and infant sisters, Maria Urban and Juliana Urban.
A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal, with Father Pascal Klein officiating. Interment will be at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Liebenthal. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 9:30-10:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal. Memorials are suggested to Masses or Friendship Meals of Southwest Kansas.
