W. Gordon Mettling, 1927-2013


GREAT BEND – W. Gordon Mettling, 83, died Sept. 11, 2013 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Aug. 7, 1927 at rural Kinsley, the son of Ora Alonzo and Daisy (Brewster) Mettling.
He married Velma May Smith June 4, 1967 at Great Bend. She died Jan. 15, 2013.
Mr. Mettling was a Great Bend resident most of his life. He was a teacher at Oakley High School, Plainville, Atlanta, Chase and Ellinwood Elementary. He was a member of First Assembly of God and Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, Alan Mettling and his wife Tracy, Great Bend; two grandchildren, Matthew Mettling and Katie Scarborough and her husband Lucas; and a great-grandson, Elijah Scarborough.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Mettling, Carl Mettling, Harold Mettling, and Wayne Mettling.
Funeral Service is scheduled at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God in Great Bend with Pastor Dwight Dozier officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.
Memorial Funds are suggested to the Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
