DENTON — Winnifred Amelia Denton Hanna, 81, daughter of Chester Swartz Denton and Agnes Helena Sharp Denton was born on Aug. 2, 1933, in Horton and passed away June 17, 2015, in Santee, Calif.
She spent her early life on farms in Kansas, Colorado, and Iowa. Winnie graduated from Lenox High School in Lenox, Iowa and attended Washburn University in Topeka where she met her future husband, Richard J. Hanna. They were united in marriage on Aug. 10, 1952, in Topeka. Winnie worked as a motel owner/manager, bank trust officer, and in the insurance business. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend as well as the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. In her youth, Winnie enjoyed teaching Sunday School. She was active in music, sports and theater, playing the lead in “Oklahoma” at Washburn University. She was fond of gardening, flowers, birds, animals, rainbows and lovingly caring for her family and friends.
Winnifred is survived by her children, a son, RJ Hanna, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter Elizabeth Suellen Shepherd and husband Stanford “Bud,” Odessa, Mo.; and daughter Mary Ann Barnett and husband Roger, Santee, Calif.; sister Audrey Grey, Scottsdale, Ariz.; brother Byron Denton and wife Carolyn, Orland, Calif.; brother Keith Denton and wife JoAnn, Bedford, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one aunt and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; and husband.
Internment will be at the Denton Cemetery.
