Act now! Election letters wanted but time is of the essence
vote-guy

Tuesday, Nov. 7, is election day, and while some people have already voted, most will cast their ballots on that day. For those wishing to support a candidate with a letter to the editor in the Great Bend Tribune’s public forum, the time to submit one is now.

Thursday, Nov. 2, is the last day letters of that type will run. That means the very latest a letter can be submitted is by noon on Nov. 1. However, the letters are run in the order received, and space is limited, so the sooner letters are sent, the better your chance of seeing it in print.

The Tribune appreciates those running for office and those supporting the candidates.

We realize many of our readers are not regular written contributors to the Tribune. We also realize that it takes a big step to write a letter and submit it, knowing the writer’s name will be attached to his or her words. With this in mind, here are the basic rules for submitting letters to the editor:

• Letters must be signed by the writer and they must be original works.

• A writer’s name and hometown will be printed with each letter.

• Letters must include a daytime phone number and email address in case we have questions about a submission. (We don’t print those, but we do require them.)

• Letters should be no more than 600 words in length.

• While we welcome letters from those supporting a candidate, candidates themselves may not submit letters on any topic during this time.

• Letters can be submitted via U.S. mail or by email, although, at this point, email may be the better option. If you drop a letter off at the Tribune office, 2012 Forest Ave., be sure to sign it and include that phone number.

Once again, we must stress that we will run no campaign letters after Thursday, Nov. 2, so letters must be received by early Wednesday, Nov. 1. No letters will be run on Saturday, Nov. 4, or election day, Nov. 7. So, those wanting to make a submission need to do so as soon as they can. Letters will be published on a first-come, first-served basis and as space permits.

Thanks for your cooperation and your participation in democracy.
