Dear Editor,
I wish it were possible to thank each and every one who brought us the fabulous September 21 - 23 weekend. The events made possible by hundreds were an inspirational kaleidoscope of: aviation education; our B-29 WWII local history; the thrilling roar of the American Legion Riders who energize our patriotism, and do so many good things; visits with pilots-past heroes who helped us win WWII; the up-close thrill of inspecting vintage aircraft; immersion in moving nostalgia; and warm reunion friendships. There was even butterfly
chasing.
The Great Bend Airport AIRFEST was total inspiration, as was its salute to the Greatest Generation, POW/MIAs, and the Flag Retirement Ceremony.
And can anyone imagine the planning skill, the leadership, the initiatives resulting in the take-off and landing of countless aircraft, including the incredibly complex coordination and management of several flyovers? Kudos for these amazing aircraft successes achieved through the leadership, expertise, and outstanding abilities of Airport Manager Martin Miller (a graduate pilot of the US Air Force Academy, Capt. Ret.).
And Saturday night, the World War II Remembrance presented from a WWII B-29 hangar. The program was beautiful, indeed exquisite-so moving and inspirational to all. It is impossible to communicate the magnificence of Karen Neuforth’s powerful National Anthem-totally thrilling! Not just for its patriotic impact and inspiration, but truly operatic quality. Karen: You should be singing the Star-Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl Halftime-or at NY’s Metropolitan. What a treat for us all.
Also: The amazing brass renditions of Marc Webster (now a band teacher and also a choir director; formerly a lead soprano bugler of the 3-year National Champion Argonne Rebels): Marc, aside from being a brass player of Doc Severinsen, Harry James and Wynton Marsalis artistry, with your flawless presentation of Taps, its echo, and the enormously difficult To The Colors-you must also have the athletic conditioning and endurance of a professional NFL football player because you had to stand at attention a half-hour or so, before you played each selection.
Indeed, all of us were honored and enthused with the exciting music, demonstrated patriotism, respect for traditional values, tribute to our POWs and MIAs, and Flag Retirement Ceremony. What a superb 3-day experience of “extreme positiveness”! Thanks to all who provided a truly unforgettable weekend.
