One person ruined Labor Day race
Placeholder Image

Dear Editor,
Labor Day was not be the same for many this year without the White Line Fever Run from Great Bend to Hoisington.
After 32 years, Barton County Community College cancelled the event because a former participant threatened to sue if the race was not moved from the east shoulder of Highway 281, where it has been run, as far as I know, without incident in the past, to the west shoulder. Law Enforcement was asked, and their response was that they would not work the race if it was moved to the west shoulder.
A more reasonable person, it seems to me, would have made the suggestion, and then if they didn’t like the way the race is set up, simply not participate.
It is unfortunate that this long-standing event has been cancelled because of one person.
Mandy Charles,
former participant,
Hays
