School should have been let out

Dear Editor,
It is my opinion that we need to bring up the issue of children’s safety in winter weather.
The school system is failing to consider the safety of our children in inclement weather.
I called the USD 428 office on Wednesday at around noon to ask if the schools were going to close early since the police were saying to not drive unless needed, and the receptionist told me no and I quote: “We have too many parents who work and it would be to hard for them to pick up there kids.”
Since when do they worry about people working?
When your child is sick they expect you to come right then and pick up your child. If you don’t they call the police and say your child is a child in need of care.
If there is a mechanical problem at school, they let school out early with no regard to parents working.
But if the roads are a sheet of ice and the temperature is freezing, we might inconvenience a few parent.
Wichita has a lot more schools and a lot more parents working, and they closed their schools early.
Schools around the area closed school for the last big storm and frigid temps, but not USD 428.
Shame on the superintendent.
What does it take to open their eyes, one of our students being hurt or worse killed to get them to close our schools in bad weather?
I’m a concerned citizen and grandmother.
