Support local Cinco de Mayo festival

Dear Editor,
On a recent morning I gave a donation to Cinco de Mayo and I would like to challenge others in the community to help fund this event. I believe this is a very important topic in America today: appreciation of the diverse heritage of America. In fact, Christina Hayes, Great Bend’s community coordinator, told me Lindsborg with its Swedish heritage was named one of the best places to travel with your girlfriends for a getaway.
Last week the City of Great Bend again voted to help promote the annual Cinco de Mayo festival that is celebrated in many towns across America. I know this is just one of many ethnic celebrations around our state, but I feel America needs a little extra ethnic diversity celebrating in 2017.
National news is full of negative attitudes, but Great Bend has a chance to show appreciation to all those who live and work in our area that are of Mexican descent. Hispanics spend their money locally to pay taxes, buy autos, groceries, clothes and a myriad of other products and services from local businesses. This is their only celebration and I would personally like to challenge the community to help make this a memorable event by supporting my friend, Jose Hernandez, in promoting this event.
If businesses or individuals would like to give a monetary donation please contact Juan Hernandez at 620-639-2699, myself at 620-786-5048 or Christina Hayes at the City, 620-793-4111. Please mark your calendars for Saturday May 6, where you can attend the celebration and enjoy the original food and festivities this rich culture has to offer.
