More power to them, if it works.
Kansas officials are going on-line to encourage people to be safer.
According to the Associated Press report, the state officials are “posting online entries from famous and not-so-famous guest bloggers in a campaign to encourage traffic safety.”
It is leading up to the second annual Kansas “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day,” which the Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting on Oct. 10.
Between now and then, these items will be on the KDOT web site.
“The first guest blogger was Gov. Mark Parkinson. His entry was posted Monday on KDOT’s Kansas Transportation Online Community link.
“This is the second year for Kansas’ which KDOT is marking on Oct. 10. The goal is to educate Kansas on traveling carefully, whether by motor vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle or on foot.
“Other guest bloggers in the campaign include Transportation Secretary Deb Miller, Crawford County Sheriff Sandy Horton and Shirley McDonald, mother of a KDOT worker killed on the job in 2005.”
It is difficult to know what will make people stop and think — or at least slow down and use more caution. This is certainly worth a try and, frankly, ought to be a great deal more cost effective than the national safety TV campaigns that cost taxpayers millions.
KDOT and our state officials should keep it up all year round.
