Breastfeeding is a normal and natural function and, since the beginning of time, has allowed human beings to get a good start on life. Not only are infants fed the healthiest milk designed for their bodies, they develop their first relationship.
It is also good for mothers, and the affectionate bond they build is strong. Creating life and sustaining that life is one of the most fulfilling activities that a woman can ever hope to do.
Breastfeeding is a skill, and new mothers need the encouragement and support of other women. Some new mothers quit nursing because of problems that could be resolved.
Breastfeeding has many advantages. The milk is at the appropriate temperature and is always available. It is also the healthiest most easily digested food for the baby.
Yet, in our society, breasts have become so sexualized, that a normal healthy function and the true purpose of breasts, has, in some instances, a source of shame.
A newborn infant requires nursing every couple of hours. A woman who spends half her days nursing is going to be spending a lot of time by herself unless it becomes normal in our society to breastfeed in public.
Plus, who wants to feed or pump in a germy restroom? Yuck. Unfortunately, sometimes that is the only place where women can go.
It would be better for our mothers and our children if it became a society norm for them to nurse in public.
It's too bad some women feel they have to make a spectacle of themselves, because they don't. A discreetly placed baby blanket will do the trick.
Babies benefit all of their lives from being breast fed for the first year of life, and that in turn benefits society.
