Engaging the world
Story shows power of print and passion

A news paper can make a difference and connect the world.
Earlier this week, the Great Bend Tribune ran an article on a gentleman from Holland who is a passionate World War II buff. In combing the woods around his home with a metal detector, he found a dog tag belonging to an American G.I. – Jesse Glen Burris.
This guy contacted the Tribune wanting help locating Burris’ family members so he could return the dog tag to its home. Burris survived the war, passing away in 2001.
No sooner had this story hit the Tribune’s website, social media site and news stands, when responses poured in from people locally and all across Kansas. Some were related to Burris and some weren’t, but they all wanted to help.
That story touched the hearts of countless folks and engaged them in a search that lead to contacts with Burris’ survivors.
The story also linked two nations. Heck, it linked two continents.
It also brought together a young man who views those brave soldiers who fought a half a world away 70 years ago as heros with a thankful nation.
We plan on running a follow up to the piece as soon as all the necessary information can be collected.
Thanks to all who came together to help make this happen.
